SUNIL CHHETRI BECOMES THE FIRST INDIAN TO PLAY IN THE US
The moment, the Indian football fraternity had been waiting for finally arrived as Sunil Chhetri made his debut for Kansas City Wizards against Colorado Rapids in a US Open qualifier match.
Sunil was played in the role of a central attacking midfielder by Peter Vermes, manager of the Wizards. However, the Indian International’s debut turned out to be quite disappointing as he was taken off at the half-way mark which also saw him get booked for a mistimed challenge. The Wizards eventually lost 2-1, having gone in the lead earlier in the game. The loss puts the Wizards out of the US Open Cup.
Speaking to the Wizards website, the manager said of Chhetri’s performance, "He was okay. He was good in possession, but he wasn't getting close enough to goal. We've got to figure out different ways to get him closer to goal."
Meanwhile, Chhetri said of his outing, "It was disappointing that we lost the match. I thought I had some good touches, but it's going to take some time, and I'm going to go back to the training field and train hard."
The Wizards now play the Sounders on 17th April.
